About the Project

The Davis Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Davis name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Davis.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Daviss), by time period (18th Century Daviss), or by topic (Davis DNA, Davis Occupations, Davis Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Task List

  • Begin adding location-specific pages for places where the Davis project will be working. You can claim the places you want to add sub-categorization for below, to avoid confusion. Indent once for country, twice for the next geographical level, etc. Add yourself to any location that has already been claimed to begin a collaboration.
  • There are many orphaned Davis profiles. Would anyone like to volunteer to adopt some? Orphaned Davis Profiles
  • Likewise, there are many unsourced Davis profiles. Anyone who would like to add sources to these profiles would be doing a great service to both the Davis surname and Wikitree in general Unsourced Davis Profiles
  • Continue adding connections to Davis profiles until every Davis is linked into the main tree.

I would love to join this project. I am descended from Edmund W. DAVIS. Edmund lived in Campbell County as a young adult. I am not sure he was born there. He is trackable for me from 1827 when he married Nancy Garner, the daughter of George Garner in 1827 there in Campbell County. They purchased a lot in the town of Marysville and sold it a year later in the early 1830's. By 1840 he and Nancy had moved on to Fluvanna County where his decendant family still exists. His son Isaac married Sarah Bybee and he served in the Civil War as well as some of his brothers..some brothers moved to Pitt County, north Carolina, but Isaac's decendants stayed until modern day. I would love to find the heritage of Edmund as well as Nancy's Garner heritage though I have hit a wall with research in both areas.

Thank you, Tracey

Lori,

This is great and would be interested in helping if I can. From my own research it would appear I descend from at least two lines of Davis's. One that leads to one William Davies (6th GGF on Maternal GGM side) Piddletrenthide, Dorset, England and the other leads to John Davis (5th GGF, Maternal GM side) Rowan, North Carolina, USA. If anyone has questions please reach out.

I would like to join the Davis Project, but am not sure how.

My mother was born Margaret Louise Davis, daughter of Margaret Kennedy Davis and Marshall Alexander Davis. Marshall Davis was from the Davis family of Fairfax and Prince William counties in Virginia. Marshall's father was Frederick Marshall Davis and his mother was Annie Laura Denty Davis. My grandfather's parents are both buried in Pohick Church Cemetery.

Hello everyone. I was unable to keep up with this study for some time. I am going to try to get caught up, but I am also welcoming anyone who wants to help run this name study, as it is a very large group and I overestimated the free time I would have when my job changed. Thank you all for the understanding!

Hi Lori,

This is an ambitious undertaking! Thank you. I have been working on my Davis line for about 15 years, and I have uploaded everything I had prior to 2010 by now. There are over 5,800 profiles in my tree, from the 21st century going back to Fulke Davis of Wales (1620-1692) Davy-295 who was one of the founders of Hartford, CT settling on Long Island, NY where many descendants still live. There were also at least two other Davis families on Long Island c.1660, and they did inter-marry from time to time, but to date I can find no connection with my Welsh Davis line and the more common English (William Davis of Massachusetts, etc) line. The English Davis line seems to have migrated south and west of New York relatively early in Colonial history; my ancestors stayed put in New York for generations. But all WikiTree members are more than welcome to dig around. Because of the inter-marriages, many of the English Davis families are also in my ancestry.

Hello, Lori,

While researching, I came across this group. I would like to join. Since my maiden name is Davis, I am very interested in the Davis name/heritage, I have been able to trace all of my maternal lines and the maternal line on my father's side with many links. However, my Davis lineage is a brick wall. My father's family seemed to settle in Cumberland and Buckingham, Virginia. Since the Buckingham County Courthouse burned, I am unable to trace those records there. My research stops with my great grandfather, John D. Davis, who was born in Cumberland in 1805 and died in Buckingham, VA on March 2, 1860. There is a small Davis cemetery in Buckingham. My grandmother and her children moved to Richmond, Virginia, where they are now buried. My aunt traced our lineage and even traveled to the UK many times for research. Unfortunately, most of her notes were lost, except for the pedigree papers (Davis stops with John D Davis). I have been able to trace some other Davis family members and have found cousins. Therefore, I am very interested in this group.

William Benjamin Davis born circa 1838 in Georgia[Probably Macon County] moved to and lived in the area of Palestine, Anderson County Texas. He died there in 1926. I've not been able to find death information for him. In 1880 he said his parents were from North Carolina. I have other Davis family members from Granville Co. NC who also moved to Texas. Henry Ward Davis picked up a Malone wife in Georgia.I believe these 2 men are distant cousins

Claude Sincox Davis-as first born son his middle name should reflect his father's mother, right? His father was William Benjamin Davis who said his parents were from NC. Claude's brother's middle name was Ward and a lot of distant cousins have Ward as a middle name. Davis Granville Co, NC Hays Co, TX

I have just joined the Davis group and hope I am doing this correctly. If not, please advise me. My ggg grandfather was Henry Davis who married a Burns and both were supposedly born in Tennessee around 1800 I am guessing. Their daughter, Mary Ann, was born in Mississippi on Oct 26, 1833. She ended up in Texas and married my gg grandfather, James Allen McDonald. This is all I know but she named her children names that were not on their father's side so I am hoping someone will have the key to this puzzle that has pestered me for many years. Her children were Thomas Alexander, John Calvin, and Henry Davis McDonald. I don't know if there are clues in those names or not but they do not belong on the McDonald side. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
I would be interested in helping search Davis surname in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. My 2nd great-grandfather Garrett Brown Davis (1816-1911) was born there. Because his parents' first names -- William and Susannah -- were so common, I've searched a number of Davises in the county looking for possible kin.

Hello Lori,

I have been trying to find my Davis ancestors for 12 years with no results; just too many of us! My great-great-grandfather was Jacob Davis, listed as Jake on his son's death certificate in South Carolina. I did find a census record from 1840 listing the family, but nothing further. Everything I have is entered on WikiTree. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, and I am happy to assist others in any way I can.

Hi Lori,

Martha J Davis is my 2nd great grandmother. Born in 1845 Kent County Delaware. Married Williams S Williams in 1861 Delaware. I am RE-researching her side right now. I am back to 1705 Del/Md. I believe these Davis' are part of the ones that moved on to Ohio. I am DNA matched to all of their children and sourced to Martha's 3 sets of grandparents with 2 of them DNA This would be great to fill in holes.

Hi Lori,

I descend from Charles Neeley Davis. I'm confident the family has spread far and wide, but my own branch came from Guilford County, N.C. to Grayson and Carroll Counties in Virginia. I have been working on this line and would like to start adding them to the name study. Thanks for starting this. Susan

Hi Lori,

My mother's maiden name is Davis. My late grandfather and especially his father were big into genealogy. I have quite a bit of tree information and will try to find time to sift through and update our line. The starting point is Greenville, Ill where my great grandfather was a Deacon. I also know that we have information which can be traced at least back to Roxbury, Mass. It will be several months until I have time to reengage with this project. Any information you may have in the meantime would be most appreciated.
